DocsMD vs Patientdesk: a revenue engine vs an AI dental software suite
Patientdesk is an AI software suite for dental practices: an AI phone receptionist, outbound follow-up calls, online booking, a free practice management system and paid marketing services. Unusually for this market, it publishes its prices. DocsMD is a Patient Revenue Engine that recovers visits and proves each dollar. Here's a fair comparison.
- Patientdesk publishes its pricing: its AI receptionist runs $250, $350 or $500 per location per month depending on chair count.
- Its receptionist plans are month-to-month, and a refundable setup fee may apply.
- Patientdesk also sells ads management, review automation, SEO and website services, and offers a free AI-native PMS.
- DocsMD is priced per location with a guarantee: at least 2x its fee in recovered revenue each month, itemized, or the next month is free.
What Patientdesk is
Patientdesk AI, Inc., a San Francisco company in Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch, builds AI software for dental practices. Its AI receptionist offers unlimited inbound minutes and concurrent calls and books directly into the practice management system, in English and Spanish on lower tiers and all languages on its top tier. It also makes outbound follow-up calls, runs AI chatbots on Meta and SMS, provides an online booking portal, and offers an AI-native practice management system that is free, with a per-SMS charge.
Beyond the front desk, Patientdesk sells Meta, Google and ChatGPT ad management, Google review automation, an AI SEO blog bot and website management. Its homepage names Open Dental, Dental4Windows, Core Practice, CareStack, Dentally and others as integrations.
What DocsMD is
DocsMD is a Patient Revenue Engine for independent practices, with a dental edition called DocsDDS. It runs detect, decide, act, prove around the clock on missed calls, cancellations, no-shows, overdue patients and insurance gaps, and Patient Lobby™ catches walkouts.
DocsMD isn't a voice receptionist or a practice management system. It works alongside the system a practice already uses, from the schedule export it already produces, with no installation or system access. Bookings are handed to the front desk to enter.
Side by side
- Pricing. Patientdesk's AI receptionist is $250 per location per month for one chair, $350 for two chairs and $500 for three or more; AI chatbots are $250 per location per month; online booking is $40 per full-time practitioner per month; its PMS is free plus $0.10 per SMS segment. Additional locations are 50% off. DocsMD is $1,149 per location per month, or a $699 Founder Rate for the first five practices in each metro, locked while subscribed, with no per-message or per-user fees.
- Contract. Patientdesk's receptionist plans are month-to-month and can be cancelled any time, effective at the end of the billing period. Its terms say a setup fee may apply and is refundable; the amount isn't published. DocsMD uses a 12-month agreement backed by its Recovery Guarantee.
- What it does. Patientdesk answers and makes calls, takes bookings and offers marketing to bring in patients. DocsMD recovers revenue from the existing schedule and patient base and proves it.
- BAA. Patientdesk's privacy policy says it enters into BAAs with healthcare practices as HIPAA requires. DocsMD signs a BAA with every practice before any patient data moves, including for the free leak audit.
- AI approach. Patientdesk is AI throughout: voice receptionist, outbound calls, chatbots, a PMS that proposes next actions and an SEO bot. It says it is hosted on SOC 2-compliant cloud infrastructure, which refers to its hosting provider. DocsMD keeps most patient replies on numbered menus that never reach an AI model, sends minimum-necessary texts, and never uses patient data to train AI.
- How results are measured. Patientdesk's pricing page doesn't describe a results guarantee. DocsMD itemizes every recovered visit by patient, date, action and dollar amount weekly, and guarantees at least 2x its fee each month or the next month is free.
Comparing prices that are built differently
Published pricing makes comparison easier, but tools priced differently still need to be compared on the same basis: cost per month against value returned per month.
Take an illustrative three-chair dental office. Patientdesk's receptionist would be $500 a month, plus $160 if four full-time practitioners use online booking, so $660 before any setup fee or add-ons. DocsMD at the regular rate would be $1,149 a month. On price alone, Patientdesk's receptionist is less.
The second half of the comparison is what each returns. A receptionist's value depends on how many answered calls turn into kept visits. A Patient Revenue Engine's value is reported directly as recovered visits, and DocsMD's guarantee sets a floor: at least $2,298 a month recovered at the regular rate, or the next month is free. Whatever you choose, ask for the return in the same unit you pay in: dollars per month.
Who each suits
Patientdesk is likely the better choice for a dental practice that wants an affordable, month-to-month AI receptionist that books directly into the PMS, especially a smaller practice with heavy call volume, or a new or growing practice that also wants ads, reviews and a website from one vendor. A practice open to switching to a new practice management system may also be interested in its free PMS.
DocsMD fits an independent practice, dental or not, that wants to keep its current system and phones and add a layer accountable for revenue across missed calls, cancellations, no-shows, overdue patients and walkouts, with itemized weekly proof and a fee-backed guarantee.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What will my setup fee be, and under what conditions is it refunded?
- If the AI books into my system, how do I review or correct its bookings?
- Will you sign a BAA before any patient data moves?
- Does your company hold its own security report, or does the claim refer to your hosting provider?
- Can you show my results in dollars of kept visits each month?
Price is half the math
DocsMD shows the other half: what comes back. A free leak audit of your schedule export, under a signed BAA, sizes your missed-call, cancellation, no-show and overdue-patient losses. Once live, each recovered visit is itemized weekly and at least 2x your fee is guaranteed every month, or the next month is free. Run the leak audit.
